Popular Oscar themes boxing & the beginning of World War II serve as backdrops for this film which garnered Academy Award Best Picture honors and five acting nominations winning Supporting Actor Oscars for Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed (on her only nomination); Montgomery Clift Kerr and Lancaster (his first) were the other nominees. Tied Gone With The Wind (1939) for the most Academy Awards won (eight) at the time for: director Fred Zinnemann (Benjy (1951)) Screenplay Writer Daniel Taradash (his only Academy recognition) Burnett Guffey’s B&W Cinematography (his first) William Lyon’s (The Jolson Story (1946)) Editing and multiple Oscar winner John Livadary’s Sound Recording; the film’s B&W Costume Design and Score were also nominated.
