Man Who Came to Dinner, The (1941)

This essential comedy features a career performance by Monty Woolley playing Sheridan Whiteside, a prominent radio lecturer and an egocentric man, who comes to visit the Stanleys, falls and injures himself such that they must take care of him until he is better, lest they be sued for all they're worth. Bette Davis plays Whiteside's personal assistant Maggie Cutler, Mary Wickes his nurse. Memorable characters include those played by Ann Sheridan as vain actress Lorraine Sheldon and Jimmy Durante as an entertainer named Banjo, who are friends of Woolley's character. Billie Burke and Grant Mitchell play the Stanleys, Daisy and Ernest. There's also a sub-plot involving the Stanley's daughter June (Elisabeth Fraser), who falls for Bert Jefferson (Richard Travis), and Whiteside's interference. George Barbier plays Dr. Bradley, who's written a book he hopes Whiteside will read. Directed by William Keighley, with a screenplay by Julius (Four Daughters (1938)) and Philip Epstein that was based on a play by Moss Hart (Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935)) and George Kaufman.
