Classic Film Guide

Boys Town (1938)

Spencer Tracy's Oscar winning portrayal of Father Flanagan (AFI's #42 hero), a real person, who created an educational community for wayward boys like Mickey Rooney's character (in the film). The film and its director, Norman Taurog (Skippy (1931)), were Oscar nominated as was John Meehan's (The Divorcee (1930)) & Dore Schary's Screenplay. It won Eleanore Griffin and Schary their only Oscars, for Best Original Story. This was Tracy's second consecutive Best Actor Oscar. A heartwarming film which proves that "no boy is bad". #81 on AFI's 100 Most Inspiring Movies list.
