Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939)

A heartwarming film about a teacher and his students featuring Robert Donat's Academy Award winning Best Actor performance, and a Best Actress nominated performance by Greer Garson in her first film! Mutual respect turns to love between the two. The film and its director, Sam Wood (the first of his four unrewarded Academy Award nominations; three for Best Director), were also nominated for Oscars as was its Screenplay (Eric Maschwitz, R.C. Sherriff, & Claudine West, who adapted James Hilton's novel), Editing (Charles Frend's only Academy recognition), and Sound (A.W. Watkins's first of four unrewarded nominations). This essential drama also features Terry Kilburn as various students (named Colley) through the years, John Mills as the grown up Peter Colley, and Paul Henreid. Donat's title character is AFI's #41 hero.
