Shop Around The Corner, The (1940)This classic's story was ripped off and later remade with Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan as You've Got Mail (1998). In this original, James Stewart (The Philadelphia Story (1940)) and Margaret Sullavan (Three Comrades (1938)) play co-workers in a small gift shop who have been corresponding "romantically" by mail, such that neither knows the identity of the other. Of course, as co-workers they can't stand each other. Frank Morgan plays the owner of the shop. Noted character actor Charles Halton appears as a detective who informs Morgan's character that his wife is having an affair with Joseph Schildkraut's (The Life of Emile Zola (1937)). Felix Bressart also appears as a friend of Stewart's. The film, which was directed by Ernst Lubitsch, was added to the National Film Registry in 1999 and appears at #28 on AFI's 100 Greatest Love Stories list. |
