Lavender Hill Mob, The (1951)

Alec Guinness stars as a humble bank clerk who plans to retire well by stealing a truck full of gold bullion from his employer. He engages a cast of characters including Stanley Holloway to assist him in his exploits. This is a very amusing film, rarely shown on TCM, and not to be missed! It won the Oscar for Best Story in 1953 (for 1952). Audrey Hepburn is in the opening scene. This was Guinness’ first Best Actor nomination, five years before he won on his second for his role in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957).
