Crowd, The (1928)

An essential silent film about the life of a young man (James Murray) with ambition, who becomes just another worker in a large office building in New York City. Then he finds, courts, and marries only to be disillusioned with married life too. However, when he & his wife (Eleanor Boardman, whose previous picture was Tell It to the Marines (1926), with Lon Chaney) have a child, all seems well in their simple life ... until tragedy strikes. Nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, the film is also responsible for earning the (Oscar-less) great King Vidor his first of five Best Director nominations. Added to the National Film Registry in 1989.
