Disraeli (1929)

An historical film (though fictionalized) about the great diplomat (George Arliss, in his Oscar winning performance & sound film debut), who as Prime Minister of Great Britain outmaneuvered the Russians to purchase the Suez Canal. In order to do this, he tricks a spy (Doris Lloyd), but still finds time to play cupid for two young people he adores, played by Joan Bennett and Anthony Bushell. Arliss' real wife Florence plays the title character's wife; Ivan F. Simpson plays the financier who figures prominently in the plot. Directed by Alfred E. Green, the film (Best Picture) and its Writing were Oscar nominated.
