Separate Tables (1958)

Outstanding drama about the lives of lonely people who've chosen to live in a seaside hotel, featuring a great cast. It was nominated for seven Oscars including Best Picture, winning two (David Niven for Best Actor with his only nomination & Wendy Hiller for Best Supporting Actress). Deborah Kerr, also nominated, Rita Hayworth, Burt Lancaster, and Rod Taylor round out the cast. Delbert Mann, who won Best Director for 1955's Best Picture Marty directed it.

Hiller runs the hotel; she and Lancaster's character, a recovering alcoholic, are keeping company. But when his beautiful famous ex-wife (Hayworth) shows up, the fireworks start. Meanwhile, Kerr's wallflower character is secretly in love with Niven's; he's an ex-Major with secrets in his closet. Kerr's snobby mother (Gladys Cooper) is delighted to learn of one of these because she wants to use its revelation to have the Major evicted. Taylor and Audrey Dalton play young lovers.
