Sergeant York (1941)Gary Cooper won his first Best Actor Academy Award for his titled portrayal in this incredible true story of an American World War I hero, pacifist sharpshooter Alvin York; it was directed by Howard Hawks (also Oscar nominated). Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Walter Brennan, Joan Leslie, George Tobias, Margaret Wycherly (who received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination) as York's mother, Stanley Ridges, Ward Bond, Noah Beery Jr., June Lockhart, and Dickie Moore (among others) lend support. The film received a total of eleven Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Writing (including John Huston & Howard Koch, among others), B&W Art Direction-Interior Decoration & Cinematography, Sound & Score, and also won for Editing (William Holmes's only Academy recognition). Coop’s title character is AFI’s #35 hero. #57 on AFI's 100 Most Inspiring Movies list. |
