Third Man, The (1949)

Acclaimed thriller set in post World War II multi-jurisdictional Vienna starring Joseph Cotton as a writer who must find his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Wells), who's involved in the thriving Black Market there. This Grahame Greene/Alexander Korda story (Greene screenplay) also features Trevor Howard as a Major in charge of one section. Won the Best B&W Cinematography Oscar, and received two other nominations including one for its director Carol Reed. Features the great Lime-line about Switzerland (e.g. " they had brotherly love & 500 years of democracy & peace. And what did that produce? The cuckoo clock"!). Unforgettable sewer chase scenes. Wells's Lime is AFI's #37 villain. #57 on AFI's 100 Greatest Movies list. #75 on AFI's 100 Most Heart Pounding Movies list.
