Star is Born, A (1954)The last time I saw this I believe there are a few scenes which, because they were lost, that had to be recreated with still photos and sound (which wasn't lost). I don't know if a pristine print exists. In any case, this is a fabulous version of this popular story of a falling star (James Mason) finding & helping a newcomer (Judy Garland) only to be overshadowed by his prodigy. A remake of the 1937 version. Jack Carson & Charles Bickford play their parts in the film excellently, as usual. Directed by George Cukor, it received six Oscar nominations (including one for each of its two leads). Added to the National Film Registry in 2000. #43 on AFI's 100 Greatest Love Stories list. "The Man that got Away" is #11 on AFI's 100 Top Movie Songs of All Time. #7 on AFI's 25 Greatest Movie Musicals list. |
