Thousand Clowns, A (1965)A very good and very funny (in a cynical sort of way) film which was nominated for Best Picture & Writing Oscars, and features the Best Supporting Acting performance by Martin Balsam. The film stars Jason Robards, Jr. as an out of work comedy writer and uncle/caretaker of a wise-cracking youth (Barry Gordon), doing so in a very non-traditional way. Barbara Harris and William Daniels play social workers who don't approve, before Harris falls for Robards, Jr.; Balsam plays his steady brother. Gene Saks is his former employer, a TV clown, who Robards, Jr. must consider working for again if he's to satisfy Daniels et al, and keep the kid. |
