Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)

With a cast much like 42nd Street (1933), though less consistently good, the storyline of this above average Musical (which spawned three similarly named sequels) focuses more on raising the required funds to produce a Broadway show. It's also well worth seeing, especially for the "Forgotten Man" sequence which ends the film. The actors featured in this one include: Warren William, Joan Blondell, Aline MacMahon (a great, funny performance!), Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, Guy Kibbee, Ned Sparks, and Ginger Rogers (who sings "We're in the money"). Joan Barclay, Billy Barty, dance director Busby Berkeley, Hobart Cavanaugh, and Sterling Holloway are among those who appear uncredited. Added to the National Film Registry in 2003. It was directed by Mervyn LeRoy. Avery Hopwood's play was adapted by Erwin Gelsey & James Seymour; David Boehm & Ben Markson provided dialogue.
