The Sting (1973)Marvin Hamlisch got an Oscar for ripping off Scott Joplin. Robert Redford got his only Best Actor nomination for his role in this film. A very entertaining con man film complete with twists, turns, and plenty of index finger nose rubbing. The first female (Julia Phillips) produced nominee won the Best Picture, Best Director (George Roy Hill, who was also nominated for his other Paul Newman-Redford pairing Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)), Best Writing, Editing, Costume Design, and Art Direction Oscars as well. Added to the National Film Registry in 2005. Redford is a green horn con man who enlists the more experienced Newman to take a big score from crime boss (Robert Shaw), for revenge. Charles Durning plays a crooked cop on Shaw's parole. Ray Walston, Eileen Brennan, Harold Gould, and Robert Earl Jones are also in the cast. |
