Gladiator (2000)

Though not as good as Spartacus (1960), this Roman Empire film was obviously the best picture from this year, winning the Oscar. Best Actor Russell Crowe's Maximus is #50 on AFI's hero list. The film's Costumes, Sound, and Special Effects were also the year's best according to the Academy. Director Ridley Scott was nominated, as was the Screenplay Writing and Joaquin Phoenix's Supporting Acting (among other nominations).
