Without Love (1945)
This is a pretty good romantic comedy about an inventor (Spencer Tracy), trying to perfect a high altitude mask for pilots, that moves in with a widow (Katharine Hepburn) who owns a big house, during World War II’s housing shortage, with somewhat predictable results. Directed by Harold S. Bucquet and based on a play by Philip Barry. Actually, there is something unique about this Hepburn-Tracy film, which doesn't really measure up to their best work (nor screenplay writer Donald Ogden Stewart's The Philadelphia Story (1940)). Their characters actually decide to marry, "without love", as two who would respect one another, work together on the project, etc. - a companionship, really, replacing jealously with honesty and so forth. Keenan Wynn plays Hepburn's cousin, who's responsible for bringing them together. Lucille Ball plays Hepburn's real estate agent. Carl Esmond plays one who would love to love Hepburn's character, but she is too hung up on her "perfect" first husband. Felix Bressart plays a professor; Gloria Grahame a flower girl. Several good scenes come to mind: one when Hepburn is trying out the mask and gets a little "high", another when Tracy sleep walks. Though not up to their usual standards, still worth a look!
