Tonight and Every Night (1945)Produced & directed by Victor Saville, with a screenplay by Abem Finkel (Sergeant York (1941)) and Lesser Samuels, this average wartime musical in glorious Technicolor stars Rita Hayworth (whose singing voice is dubbed by Martha Mears) in her first "name above the title" role. She plays a singer-dancer in a London theater that refuses to close its door or interrupt its performances despite the nightly German bombing raids. She's accompanied by the singing talents of Janet Blair and the dancing talents of Marc Platt (check out his audition!), whose character secretly adores Hayworth's. Lee Bowman plays an RAF pilot who falls in love with Hayworth, whose character sings "You Excite Me". Their "on again, off again" relationship moves the story along through several musical numbers that led to the film's Score being nominated for an Oscar; "Anywhere", sung by Page, also received a nomination for Best Original Song. Professor Lamberti plays an old vaudeville xylophone player, named ‘The Great Waldo’, that finally gets into the act. Florence Bates plays "The Music Box" theater's manager. Jim Bannon plays a Life Magazine photographer that gets the story of the romance, in retrospect, from stage manager, air raid warden Ernest Cossart. Philip Merivale has a short part as Bowman's Reverend father. Shelley Winters appears uncredited as one of the chorus girls. |
