Two Weeks in Another Town (1962)
Directed by Vincente Minnelli, this Irwin Shaw (The Talk of the Town (1942)) novel was adapted by Charles Schnee (The Bad and the Beautiful (1952)), some parts of which are edited into this one) to make an average behind-the-scenes drama about Hollywood, and how films are made. Kirk Douglas plays an actor who, after what some would consider a career ending injury, is summoned by his old director Maurice Kruger (Edward G. Robinson), to help him finish a picture in Italy. There are several skeletons in everyone's closet, some of which aren't revealed until the end. Douglas's character had become an out-of-control star some four years prior which wasn't helped any by his relationship with Carlotta (Cyd Charisse); it led to the automobile accident which scarred his face and put him in a mental institution. However, he and the formerly revered director had made several great films together; Douglas is upset to learn that the ‘two weeks’ he'd been hired for doesn't include acting and instead involves dubbing the picture (from Italian to English). The film stars in this Kruger film are played by George Hamilton, who mirrors Douglas's earlier persona, and Daliah Lavi, whom ends up in a love triangle with the mentor (Douglas) and his protege (Hamilton). The philandering Kruger's longtime shrewish wife is played by Claire Trevor. James Gregory plays a film critic, George Macready a rival producer to Kruger's (Rosanna Schiaffino), and Joanna Roos & Vito Scotti play hired hands.
