Madame Bovary (1949)An outstanding adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's novel (by Robert Ardrey, Khartoum (1966)) about a woman/wife not satisfied, brought to life by Jennifer Jones in the title role, Van Heflin as the husband working overtime, James Mason, Louis Jourdan as her lover, Gene Lockhart, Gladys Cooper, Harry Morgan, George Zucco, and Ellen Corby (among others). It was directed by Vincente Minnelli. James Mason plays the author (e.g. Flaubert), on trial for writing the scandalous novel, deemed indecent. So, he narrates the story of Emma (Jones) who's poverty & ambition causes her to marry Charles Bovary (Heflin), whom she then drives to provide her with everything she wants. When she's got the "things" she wants, she pursues the men she wants, winning Jourdan. A very destructive "lady". The film received an Academy Award nomination for its Art Direction. |
