Silk Stockings (1957)
Silk Stockings (1957)
Though not nearly as good as the original this musical remake of Ninotchka (1939) is entertaining because let’s face it Cyd Charisse isn’t hard to look at and when paired with Fred Astaire one always gets to see memorable dance sequences. Charisse plays the cold Russian woman (Ninotchka) that Garbo played in the original. Though the plot is different Astaire plays the Melvyn Douglas-like role (e.g. the one that melts Ninotchka’s icy demeanor). Also see Janis Paige (who plays the lead performer in a film Astaire’s character is trying to produce); Peter Lorre as one of the Russian Commissars who’s enjoying the fruits of Paris and naturally doesn’t want to return home; and George Tobias as the Commissar of Art who must insist that his fellow countrymen return to the motherland. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian Arthur Freed produced with a Score by Cole Porter.
