Classic Film Guide

Now, Voyager (1942)

Great cast, and an even better film. Bette Davis, in an Academy Award nominated (for Best Actress) performance, plays a woman who "blooms". Paul Henreid and Claude Rains play the men who help her "transform" from a young "old maid" into a beautiful woman. Gladys Cooper, who plays Davis's mother, received her first (of three unrewarded) Best Supporting Actress nomination(s); Bonita Granville, Lee Patrick, Franklin Pangborn, and Mary Wickes (among others) help round out the cast. Max Steiner's Score won an Oscar. It was directed by Irving Rapper, based on the Olive Higgins Prouty novel, with a screenplay by Casey Robinson (Captain Blood (1935)). #23 on AFI’s 100 Greatest Love Stories list. Davis's climactic line to Henreid's about their forbidden romance (since he's married!) - "Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars." is #46 on AFI's 100 Greatest Movie Quotes list.

Added to the National Film Registry in 2007.
