Invisible Stripes (1939)
Directed by Lloyd Bacon this crime drama boasts a terrific cast which includes George Raft Humphrey Bogart William Holden Jane Bryan Flora Robson Henry O’Neill Paul Kelly and Lee Patrick in addition to several well known and recognizable character actors who appear uncredited. The story is about two cons Raft & Bogart getting out of prison after serving their time. Raft’s character wants to go straight to be a good example to his younger brother (Holden) who’s dating Bryan and for his mom (Robson). Bogart’s character picks off where he left off in the gang. Raft is “forced” back into his former way of life feeling his “invisible stripes” when he can’t find suitable work nor anyone who’ll trust him. Holden is tempted to take the quicker illegal route to what he wants for himself (he’s a mechanic who wants to own a garage) and Bryan; Raft wants to help especially if he can keep his brother stay clean. Patrick plays Bogey’s girlfriend; Kelly a gang member. Moroni Olsen plays the warden; O’Neill plays the parole officer.
