Thing from Another World, The (1951)A sci-fi classic, later remade by John Carpenter as The Thing (1982) with Kurt Russell. A large round object has crash landed in the Arctic, which is then explored by the Military personnel who maintain a remote research outpost there. Kenneth Tobey plays the Captain in charge, who must balance base safety with the scientists' need to investigate their mysterious find, frozen in ice. Fairly dated, but exciting nonetheless. Added to the National Film Registry in 2001. James Arness plays the title role. It was directed by Academy Award nominated editor Christian Nyby (Red River (1948)), representing his directorial debut, with a screenplay by Charles Lederer. |
