All This and Heaven Too (1940)
Bette Davis stars as a governess for nobleman Charles Boyer his wife Barbara O’Neil (who received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination) and their children (including June Lockhart Ann Todd and Virginia Weidler). Witnessing her loving interaction and tutoring of them especially the attention she pays his son who falls sick because of his wife causes Boyer to fall in love with Davis. She is a stark contrast to his cold wife who ultimately discharges her and refusing to provide a letter of recommendation keeps her from finding work. His wife’s jealousy also leads to tragedy. Henry Daniell plays an investigator of these subsequent events. The story is told in flashback by Davis’s character an infamous woman that was imprisoned who is now a school teacher supported by Jeffrey Lynn. Henry Davenport also appears playing a key role as a servant that figures in the drama. Directed by Anatole Litvak based on the Rachel Field novel with a Casey Robinson (Captain Blood (1935)) screenplay the film and its B&W Cinematography also received Academy Award nominations.
