Bells Are Ringing (1960)

Bells Are Ringing (1960)

Judy Holliday’s last movie role five years before her death (which was two weeks shy of her 44th birthday from throat cancer) showcased her singing ability and talent for creating different voices. Her character is an operator at Susanswerphone – a telephone answering service company who can’t keep from meddling in the affairs of her clients. Vincente Minnelli directed her on-screen performance of this Betty Comden-Adolph Green play. André Previn’s Score was Oscar nominated. Holliday’s co-stars were Dean Martin a blocked writer who’s a client of the service that becomes her love interest in this average Musical comedy Fred Clark plays Martin’s would-be publisher-producer; Eddie Foy Jr. plays the mastermind of a bookie system that dates & dupes the service’s owner Jean Stapleton into having her operators take bets while they think they’re taking orders of classical music for the Titanic record company; Ruth Storey plays another operator; Dort Clark plays a vice squad officer that wrongly assumes the answering service is a front for a lonely-hearts club (i.e. prostitution); Frank Gorshin plays an unemployed Marlon Brando-like method actor and Bernard West plays a song writing dentist – both of whom are also clients of the telephone service that through their “muse” Holliday get mixed up with Martin’s eventual writing and his publisher’s production of “The Midas Touch” (which an uncredited Hal Linden sings in a nightclub). Holliday’s fans should enjoy it particularly because it’s in Color even though Jule Styne’s music and Comden-Green’s lyrics are unremarkable.
