Hell's Heroes (1930)

A most unusual film by director William Wyler, and starring Charles Bickford, about three outlaws running from the law by hiding out in the desert. While trying to find water, they happen upon a dying, pregnant woman on Christmas eve. She inspires them, and in the spirit of the Three Wise Men, they care for her newborn when she dies shortly after giving birth. This is actually the fourth version (out of seven?) of this Peter Kyne novel on film, and the best one I've seen so far.

Update: on February 17, 2005, I watched Three Godfathers (1936), which I now believe to be the best of these films.
