Women The (1939)
Women The (1939)
An outstanding all-female cast film directed by ladies director George Cukor about "catty" women rivalries and infidelity. This above average comedy drama features Norma Shearer Joan Crawford Rosalind Russell Mary Boland Paulette Goddard Joan Fontaine Marjorie Main Virginia Grey Ruth Hussey child actress Virginia Weidler Cora Witherspoon Lucile Watson and Hedda Hopper (among others).
Shearer is a woman who finds out her husband is having an affair with Crawford. It’s in the finding out gossip et al that makes it entertaining – particular a scene with Shearer & Crawford alone in her dressing room. There are some great lines spoken by all especially Russell (of course). Shearer then leaves for Reno (the way one used to have to) to get a divorce where she meet other women in the same predicament. The dialogue throughout the film is as fabulous as the actresses that speak it. I should also mention that there is an early Technicolor fashion show featured in the film. The Clare Boothe Luce play was adapted by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin (What Price Hollywood? (1932)). Added to the National Film Registry in 2007.
Later remade as the musical The Opposite Sex (1956).
