Loved One, The (1965)

The motion picture with something to offend everyone! Directed by Tony Richardson (Tom Jones (1963)), with a screenplay co-written by Terry Southern (Dr. Strangelove (1964)) and Christopher Isherwood that was based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh, this above average black comedy stars Robert Morse, Jonathan Winters, and Rod Steiger. Morse plays Englishman Dennis Barlow, who's a bit of a poet that ends up in Hollywood; he has to arrange his uncle's interment, and eventually finds himself competing with a mortuary run by the Reverend Wilbur Glenworthy (Winters’s character). Steiger plays a truly memorable Mr. Joyboy, who maintains a really bizarre home life living with his mom (Ayllene Gibbons). Barlow and Joyboy compete for the affections of one of Glenworthy’s employees, Aimee Thanatogenous (played by Anjanette Comer). Dana Andrews, Milton Berle, James Coburn, John Gielgud, Tab Hunter, Margaret Leighton, Liberace, Roddy McDowell, Robert Morley, Barbara Nichols, Bernie Kopell, Alan Napier, Paul Williams, and Jamie Farr (uncredited), among others, also appear.
