To Have and Have Not (1944)

William Faulkner adapted this Ernest Hemingway novel for the screen, a wartime romance adventure which was directed by Howard Hawks, that marks the first of four films featuring the on-screen pairing of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (who became an off-screen pair as well). Bacall had just turned twenty when this film was released, her screen debut, and was made famous for her character Slim's line to Bogie's: "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow." (#34 on AFI's 100 Greatest Movie Quotes list). Walter Brennan, Hoagy Carmichael, and Sheldon Leonard also appear. #60 on AFI's 100 Greatest Love Stories list.
