Lover Come Back (1961)
Lover Come Back (1961)
This Oscar nominated story (co-written by Stanley Shapiro – Pillow Talk (1959)) by director Delbert Mann (Marty (1955)) is one of the many delightful comedies from the triumvirate of Doris Day Rock Hudson and Tony Randall. This one has Day playing ad executive Carol Templeton who’s furious for having just lost an account to Jerry Webster (Hudson) a master of “landing” the decision making male clients by entertaining them with booze and women. Randall plays Pete Ramsey the incompetent son who’s now in charge of his (deceased) father’s agency the one that employs Webster. Ramsey is so determined to prove that he’s capable of running things that he launches a full scale campaign for VIP a non-existent yet ambiguous product about which Webster had made bogus commercials using (to satisfy) his wannabe famous girlfriend Rebel (Edie Adams). The response to the phony ads is so overwhelming that Webster convinces Ramsey that they can just create VIP by hiring an inventor Dr. Linus Tyler (Jack Kruschen) to make it. Templeton determined to beat Webster at his game decides to find Dr. Tyler to convince him to sign with her agency instead. When Webster sees the attractive Ms. Templeton he pretends to be the doctor himself and “forces” her to use tactics that were previously distasteful to her to “win” him … while at the same time he is falling for her purity.
Oscar nominated actor Jack Oakie (The Great Dictator (1940)) and Oscar winning actor Jack Albertson (The Subject Was Roses (1968)) also appear. Ann B. Davis (from TV’s The Brady Bunch) and Donna Douglas (from TV’s The Beverly Hillbillies) play Carol’s and Pete’s secretaries respectively. Ted Bessell (from TV’s That Girl) appears uncredited as an elevator operator.
