La Strada (1954)

A great drama from director Federico Fellini which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film; it's screenplay, co-written by the director and Tullio Pinelli (his first nomination) was also Oscar nominated (Ennio Flaiano also contributed). It stars Anthony Quinn (Viva Zapata! (1952)) as a gruff circus performer, a strongman, who travels the Italian countryside giving shows. He "buys" a girl (Giulietta Masina), to be his wife and co-star, from her poor mother. He treats her badly. However, when he "joins" an existing "circus", she meets another performer, a fool (Richard Basehart), and the attraction is mutual. This causes a jealous, and ultimately tragic reaction from her husband.
