It’s Love I’m After (1937)
It’s Love I’m After (1937)
Directed by Archie Mayo Casey Robinson (Captain Blood (1935)) adapted this silly Maurice Hanlin story about two stage stars who are romantically involved yet never seem to get married; they’ve failed to make it almost a dozen times! The couple is played by Leslie Howard and Bette Davis. Things get complicated when a young woman’s (Olivia de Havilland) infatuation with Howard threatens her engagement to another man Henry (Patric Knowles). Henry engages Howard’s character to act terribly in front of de Havilland’s so that she’ll give up her fantasy and return to him. Unfortunately it doesn’t work. Henry takes Howard to her father’s (George Barbier) home where she lives and no matter how badly Howard behaves her “love” for him grows. In fact Davis’s character must be asked to intervene causing her to realize what she’s got in Howard. Eric Blore plays Howard’s valet as humorously as always. Bonita Granville (These Three (1936)) Spring Byington (You Can’t Take it With You (1938)) and Veda Ann Borg also appear.
