Only Angels Have Wings (1939)

Only Angels Have Wings (1939)

Howard Hawks directed this adventure romance drama starring Cary Grant and Jean Arthur … what more do you need to know? Oh yeah Rita Hayworth is in it too! Another film which proves that the Golden Year of 1939 was perhaps the best movie year ever (for great ones released)! Grant leads a group of men who must fly in dangerous conditions to deliver the mail etc.; Arthur happens to find herself in this South American outpost. She doesn’t understand why he is so solemn until circumstances enlighten her. Thomas Mitchell plays Grant’s loyal friend; Hayworth the wife of another pilot (Richard Barthelmess) with problems of his own. Sig Ruman and Noah Berry Jr. also appear. Hawks’s own story was scripted by Jules Furthman (Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)). The film received two Academy Award nominations one for its B&W Cinematography and the other for its Special Effects (marking the only Oscar nominations for Roy Davidson and Edwin Hahn).
