A lovely film about a man and his rabbit. James Stewart’s Oscar nominated performance is one he is said to have not cared for and one that was played much more sinisterly by him on the stage. Excellent roles played by Josephine Hull who won the Supporting Actress Academy Award on her only nomination Cecil Kellaway and Jesse White. #35 on AFI’s 100 Funniest Movies list. This essential fantasy comedy drama was directed by Henry Koster (The Bishop’s Wife (1947)); Oscar Brodney helped Mary Chase write the screenplay for her play about Elwood P. Dowd (Stewart) a man with an imaginary friend a six-foot invisible rabbit named Harvey. Only Elwood believes in the titled bunny at least initially. His sister Veta (Hull) tells everyone that her gregarious brother drinks and is eventually convinced to have him committed to an asylum run by Dr. Chumley (Kellaway); White plays a womanizing brute of a male nurse that works there.
