Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)

Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)

Directed by two time Academy Award winning director Lewis Milestone (his last film after Carol Reed quit) and based on the novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall with a screenplay by Charles Lederer this below average yet lavish Technicolor remake by MGM of their 1935 Oscar winner runs nearly three hours (and feels even longer). Marlon Brando’s interpretation of the mutinous 1st Lieutenant Fletcher Christian is unusual to say the least; Trevor Howard plays the cruel Captain William Bligh well enough but fails to live up to the standard set by Charles Laughton in the original. Richard Harris Hugh Griffith Richard Haydn Tim Seely and Tarita (who’d become Brando’s third and last wife; after he’d divorced the original film’s Movita) are among the other cast members; Henry Daniell appears (uncredited) in his second to last film role as the court martial judge. This movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture Color Art Direction-Set Decoration and Cinematography Special Effects (most impressive; pre-CGI) Editing (John McSweeney Jr.’s only Oscar nomination) its titled Love Song and Score by Bronislau Kaper (Lili (1953)).
