A favorite of many this William Wyler directed film based on the Sinclair Lewis novel features great acting by Walter Huston (his first Academy Award nominated performance Best Actor) Ruth Chatterton Paul Lukas Mary Astor David Niven Spring Byington and Maria Ouspenskaya (her first Best Supporting Actress nomination). Huston plays an aging businessman who takes his younger wife (Chatterton) abroad for a second honeymoon. But they soon discover that they’ve grown apart – he’s satisfied with where he is in life she still feels young and returns his generosity by flirting with anyone and everyone including Lukas & Niven. But he finds someone with whom to spend his time in Astor. Producer Samuel Goldwyn and Director Wyler received their first Oscar nominations. Besides being nominated for Best Picture and Oscar Lagerstrom’s (Raffles (1930)) Sound Recording the film also earned Sidney Howard (Arrowsmith (1931)) a Screenplay Writing nomination and won Richard Day (The Dark Angel (1935)) the Art Direction statuette. Added to the National Film Registry in 1990.
