This essential comedy Western directed by George Marshall was based on the novel by Max Brand with a story and screenplay by Felix Jackson (Bachelor Mother (1939)) and features an all star cast. James Stewart is the new deputy (and title character) who must "tame" a wild corrupt town with a saloon that features Frenchy played by Marlene Dietrich. Also in the cast are Una Merkel Mischa Auer Charles Winninger Brian Donlevy Allen Jenkins Warren Hymer Billy Gilbert Sam Hinds Jack Carson and even child stars Dickie Moore and Ann Todd (among others). Completely ignored by the Academy in an already crowded (Golden) year of outstanding films at least it was added to the National Film Registry in 1996.
