Picture of Dorian Gray The (1945)

Adapted from the Oscar Wilde novel by its director Albert Lewin this essential drama features amusing dialogue most of which is spoken by George Sanders (in particular) as Lord Henry Wotton – including "forgive me for the intelligence of my argument; I’d forgotten that you were a Member of Parliament." It stars Hurt Hatfield (his signature role) as Dorian Gray a man who’s seemingly made a deal with the devil to stay young looking and is influenced by Lord Wotton a man of questionable character himself. There is a reflection of Gray’s sins and aging in a painting which of course he keeps locked away and hidden from everyone else. Through the years he becomes involved with women played by Angela Lansbury (who received her second of three unrewarded Supporting Actress Oscar nominations) and Donna Reed the niece of the title painting’s artist (Lowell Gilmore). Peter Lawford also plays a key role. The film won Harry Stradling Sr. (The Human Comedy (1943)) his first Oscar for its B&W Cinematography even though there is a brief color shot of the painting and was also nominated for its Art Direction-Interior Decoration.
