All Through the Night (1941)

It's a comedy, it's a drama, it's a patriotic war film - it's all three! Directed by Vincent Sherman with a screenplay by Leonard Spigelgass and Edwin Gilbert. Humphrey Bogart plays a cheesecake loving New York gangster who ultimately discovers a group of Nazi's are operating in the city and planning to blow up the U.S. Navy's newest battleship in the harbor. Conrad Veidt plays the head Nazi, naturally. Peter Lorre and Judith Anderson are also bad guys, of course. Jane Darwell plays Bogart's loving Ma; Frank McHugh and William Demarest primarily, plus Phil Silvers and Jackie Gleason, are part of Bogart's gang who infiltrate (and double-talk) the Fifth Columnists', intending to disrupt their plans. Also appearing are Kaaren Verne, Wallace Ford, and Barton MacLane & Edward Brophy as club owners. Don't take it seriously, just sit back and enjoy the action. Fun!
