Voice of the Turtle The (1947)
Voice of the Turtle The (1947)
Also known as One for the Book (1947). Written by John Van Druten (Gaslight (1944)) and directed by Irving Rapper this is an above average film not unlike The Clock (1945) with Judy Garland & Robert Walker. It stars Eleanor Parker (Interrupted Melody (1955)) as an actress who lives alone in an apartment in New York. When her boyfriend played by Kent Smith fails to commit to their relationship circumstances lead to a rebound romance with a soldier on leave. Initially her “man-eater” girlfriend played deliciously as always by Eve Arden (Mildred Pierce (1945)) finds herself with two dates for the same night one with an officer (played by Wayne Morris) and one with a (gentleman) Sergeant played by Ronald Reagan. Helping out her friend in a pinch Parker’s character “doubles” with Reagan’s and ends up letting him stay in her apartment for the weekend … with predictable (1940’s type) results. A charming story and just the kind of role Reagan excelled at during his movie career. Surprisingly this film is listed in The New York Times ” Guide to the Best 1000 Movies Ever Made”.
