Riders of the Range (1950)
Directed by Lesley Selander and written by Norman Houston this B movie Tim Holt Western also includes his regular lady’s man sidekick Chito Jose Gonzalez Bustamante Rafferty (Richard Martin). As the titled characters Holt plays Kansas Jones; he and Chito find themselves looking for work in Cedar Hill Arizona not far from Mesa City site of a George O’Brien B Western almost a dozen years earlier.
Once in Cedar Hill Kansas and Chito rescue ‘Dusty’ Willis (Jacqueline White) from a dicey situation in Clint Burrows’ (Reed Hadley) saloon. Burrows had just let Willis’ brother Harry (Robert Clarke) escape out the back door after taking him for yet another poker hand. In fact Harry’s gambling problem has him into a $3000 debt to Burrows who now insists that Harry pay his debt by helping to rustle his own sister’s cattle. Burrows then employs The Ringo Kid (Tom Tyler) to receive the cattle but the next morning Kansas sniffs out “something wrong” and he and Chito break up the prearranged theft.
As usual there’s a lot of action packed into this 60 minute Western including some back-and-forth dirty dealing among the criminals and “The Riders” getting arrested for murder! If not for Burrows using his henchman Trump Dixon (William Tannen) to assist with the failed rustling attempt Kansas and Chito would not have had a clue nor a way to clear their names and enable Sheriff Cole (Robert Barrat) to apprehend the guilty.
