The Departed (2006)

"And the winner of the Best Motion Picture of the Year goes to … the F-word!" But seriously director Martin Scorsese (Raging Bull (1980)) won his first Best Director Oscar on his sixth nomination from the Academy in the category; his long time editor Thelma Schoonmaker and writer William Monahan – who adapted the original screenplay (Mou gaan dou aka Infernal Affairs (2002)) – also won. Mark Wahlberg received his only acting nomination (to date) for his Supporting role. The story is set in Boston where the police and the mob are constantly at ‘war’. Of the three main mob bosses/families Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) is the one that Police Lieutenant Queenan (Martin Sheen) really wants to nab. So much so that he and his crude-mouthed assistant Dignam (Wahlberg) recruit the son of a now deceased highly respected boss to infiltrate his operation William ‘Billy’ Corrigan played by Leonardo DiCaprio. What the police don’t know initially but soon find out is that Costello has groomed his own police insider since he was a kid named Colin Sullivan played by Matt Damon. So it’s a battle and only a matter of time before either Costello finds the rat within his organization or the police find the highly placed mole with their own ranks first. Ray Winstone plays Costello’s right-hand man Mr. French and Alec Baldwin plays Sullivan’s commander Ellerby. Vera Farmiga plays Madolyn a psychiatrist that works with police officers that are suffering from stress and other mental and emotional problems; she not only treats DiCaprio’s character but dates and eventually moves in to live with Damon’s.
