Classic Film Guide

Wizard of Oz, The (1939)

I used to watch this annually when I was a child, didn't you? Judy Garland singing "Over the Rainbow", #1 on AFI's 100 Top Movie Songs of All Time and an Oscar winner to boot, was nearly cut from the film! The film's score, which features "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead (#82 on AFI's 100 Top Movie Songs of All Time), also won the Oscar. Mervyn LeRoy's film was nominated for Best Picture of the Year by the Academy and was officially directed by Victor Fleming, who also won the Best Director Oscar for his work on the Oscar winning Best Picture that year.

The terrific cast who, along with Ms. Garland, helped bring L. Frank Baum's novel to life on the screen includes: Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow, Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Jack Haley as the Tin Man, Billie Burke as Glinda the Good Witch, and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West, AFI's #4 villain. Added to the National Film Registry in 1989. #6 on AFI's 100 Greatest Movies list. #43 on AFI's 100 Most Heart-Pounding Movies list. "Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." is #4 on AFI's 100 Greatest Movie Quotes list. "There's no place like home." is #23 on AFI's 100 Greatest Movies list. "I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!" is #99 of AFI's 100 Greatest Movies list. #26 on AFI's 100 Most Inspiring Movies list. #3 on AFI's 25 Greatest Movie Musicals list.
