A terrific adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel about a father (and his wife) who must find husbands for their FIVE daughters set in the 1800’s in England. Laurence Olivier plays Mr. Darcy suitor of the eldest daughter Elizabeth Bennet (Greer Garson Goodbye Mr. Chips (1939)). Edmund Gwenn & Mary Boland play Mr. & Mrs. Bennet. Edna May Oliver plays Lady Catherine; Maureen O’Sullivan & Ann Rutherford also play Bennet daughters sisters. Cedric Gibbons who designed the Oscar won his third (of ELEVEN on 39 nominations!) Academy Award for Art Direction (with Paul Groesse his first Academy recognition). It was directed by Robert Z. Leonard (The Great Ziegfeld (1936)) with a screenplay by Aldous Huxley & Jane Murfin (What Price Hollywood? (1932)) and dramatization by Helen Jerome.
