The Broadway Melody (1929)

The Broadway Melody (1929)

This is an enjoyable though dated musical about two sisters trying to make it on Broadway and their men. It won the Best Picture Academy Award. You’ll also briefly see two venerated character actors early in their careers William Demarest and James Gleason (though both are uncredited). Though MGM was late to the "talkie" revolution the production quality of this musical a popular early genre after the advent of sound was so superior to the rest of the industry that it won the Oscar. A triumph for Irving Thalberg who was responsible for advising Louis B. Mayer to delay the company’s adoption of the new standard.

Directed by Harry Beaumont who earned his only Academy Award recognition with a Best Director nomination this Edmund Goulding story includes only 3 credited actors – Charles King Anita Page and Bessie Love who received her only Oscar recognition (a Best Actress nomination) as well.
