Humoresque (1946)
This terrific drama directed by Jean Negulesco and based on the Fannie Hurst novel (with a screenplay by Clifford Odets and Zachary Gold) is about a very talented poor violinist (played by John Garfield) who becomes the object of a wealthy woman’s (Joan Crawford) obsession. As good as the two leads are in this film it’s almost stolen by wise-cracking Oscar Levant who plays another struggling musician that "grew up" with Garfield’s character; J. Carrol Naish (among others) also appears. The film’s Score received an Academy Award nomination (Franz Waxman would win his first Oscar on his next nomination for Sunset Blvd. (1950)).
