Carefree (1938)

Better than average Fred and Ginger fare, Astaire plays a single psychiatrist who thinks women are silly. His friend, played by Ralph Bellamy, asks him to help him with his fiancé (Rogers) which he attempts to do through, among other methods, hypnosis. Of course, you probably already know where this will lead and that the movie will include lots of great dancing and (Irving Berlin) songs, which it does. One of the few films with actress Luella Gear as Rogers's Aunt Cora, it also features several recognizable character actors including Jack Carson, Clarence Kolb, Franklin Pangborn ... even Paul Guilfoyle & Hattie McDaniel, uncredited. The film received Oscar nominations for Art Direction, Musical Score, and Berlin's song "Change Partners and Dance with Me". Directed by Mark Sandrich with a story co-written by Guy Endore (Story of G. I. Joe (1945), Dudley Nichols (The Informer (1935)), and Allan Scott (So Proudly We Hail! (1943)), among others.
